If you're old enough to remember that iconic Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise poster in the 1986 film Top Gun from Paramount Pictures, then you'll be thrilled to hear that there will be a sequel and that Val Kilmer will likely be in it.

Or not.

A movie about naval fighter pilots in training, Top Gun has gone down as a classic and pivotal movie from the 80s that has made its indelible mark in pop culture. It is starred by Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Kilmer, who played the part of a competing fighter pilot.

Though many may remember Val Kilmer some 20 pounds ago, when he was still svelte and suave. But millions of fans will no doubt get a kick out of seeing him in a sequel, coming in thirty years too late.

CBC reports that Val Kilmer made an overexcited post on Facebook, detailing how he was very pleased about a certain phone call to his agent. The conversation was no doubt about reprising his role in the original Top Gun movie.

An early revelation had the Top Gun Fandom talking about the certainty of the sequel, prompting Kilmer to make an apology about his premature announcement. The edited post read: "I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script... This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun...An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent..."

The post seemed to indicate that although Kilmer took the news of the offer positively, this should not be misconstrued as a confirmation that the Top Gun 2 sequel would fly full speed ahead.

If there is any consolation for fans, it would be that Kilmer is not the only one who has expressed interest in the sequel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise, who played the lead role of Maverick, have also said yes to the idea. "It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets," Cruise said earlier this year.

Sydney Morning Herald also reports that the Kilmer's post was rambling, having likewise mentioned other things he'd agree to, such as a chance to work with Gene Hackman or Francis Ford Coppola. Would they be in Top Gun 2? Is the question of the hour.
