The Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Fight 2 is doomed.
The likelihood of a rematch between Mayweather Jr., and Pacquiao is more bleak than what the boxing world hope for, not only because age is catching up on the of the best pound-per-pound fighters, but also retirement as each of them wants to pursue a different career path outside of the ring.
In Manny's case, who is currently an incumbent congressman in southern Philippines, wants to seek a senate seat and eventually, become president of the Republic of the Philippines.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, boxing promoter and founder and CEO of Top Rank, Inc., Bob Arum said that the 36-year-old Pacquiao would fight again next year, when his shoulder is healthy. He added that Pacquiao will retire after his last fight before Mayweather himself hangs his glove.
"He's gonna fight again next year but his goal is to become a senator in the Philippines, which he will be next year, and then to be president." He added, "I think Manny will retire once he's elected to the Senate of the Philippines which is next year ... he's gonna hang up the gloves."
Asked to comment if Pacquiao will pursue a second match against Mayweather, Arum commented, "Well I don't think that's necessarily [Pacquiao's] goal. He's going to fight again next year, but his goal is to become a senator in the Philippines, which he will be next year, and then to be president."
Pacquiao is a sitting congressman and has been involved in Philippine politics for several years now.
Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in their meeting in May, dubbed as the Fight of the Century. Both camps have denied the possibility of a rematch with Arum announcing in August he was arranging a bout between Pacquiao and former two-time world champion Amir Khan.
Meanwhile, Floyd's father, Mayweather Sr., who also acts as his trainer, said that he doubts his 38-year-old son would retire even after he defeats Andre Berto on September 12. He told Sky Sports that Mayweather Jr., will try to beat the record of Rocky Marciano, who has a 50-0 win-loss record. Mayweather Jr., record currently stands at 49-0.
Mayweather Sr said, "Myself, I can't say that Floyd is going to fight any more but I think he might fight again. If things are right for him and people are doing what they're supposed to do, it's more than likely he's going to fight. That's my belief.
"I definitely think that it's a record that needs to be broken. I think Floyd can break it but I want to make sure he's ready. When I say ready, I mean he feels good and is ready to go. You can't be ready when you don't feel good.
"I love everything my son has done in boxing. He controlled boxing. Boxing today is all about Floyd. He controls it right now today. Nobody else. Floyd controls boxing."
