In the past weeks, Google has been repeatedly reported to launch not one but two co-branded Nexus smartphones. The updated 2015 editions of its successful Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 handsets will supposedly be manufactured LG and Huawei, respectively.
Until now, tech observers have been calling the upcoming smaller Nexus as "LG Nexus 5" or "Nexus 5 2015." However, a new report suggests that those will not be its final name.
Citing an unnamed insider source, Android Authority shared that Google and LG's next generation model will be called "LG Nexus 5X." The tech site's source further claims that it will be announced on September 29 during an official launch event.
This information supports an earlier CNET post which mentioned that Google is holding a Nexus event at San Francisco on the said date. The report also divulged that the Nexus 5X will be priced at $399 for the 16GB base model while the 32GB storage model will cost $499.
At that price range, it will put the Nexus 5X in direct rivalry against Motorola's Moto X Pure Edition variant in the U.S. The new Motorola flagship also costs $399, but its specifications may be more premium that what will be offered by the upcoming LG Nexus.
Furthermore, Android Authority's source says that a previously leaked photo of the LG Nexus 5 (pictured above) is indeed legitimate. Last month, the image was shared publicly online by a Google+ user.
It shows that the device will feature a slightly protruding camera with dual LED flash along with what appears to be a laser autofocus module. There is also a fingerprint scanner right below the rear camera. The handset will reportedly be available in black, white, and light blue. As mentioned in previous reports, it will feature a matte plastic body and support for the new USB Type-C standard.
The LG Nexus 5X, or whatever Google decides to call it, is expected to sport a 5.2-in HD 1080p screen, a Snapdragon 808 processor from Qualcomm, and 3GB worth of RAM. A 12.3-megapixel main camera will be fitted at the back as well as a 2,700mAh battery inside.
While the site is "very confident in the veracity" of the report, the source warns that the information he or she has shared is not final and the tech giant may change some of the official details. Nonetheless, the LG Nexus 5X will go on sale at the company's official online store on September 29, the same day of the announcement--that is if Google decides to stick with its earlier plans.
