Psalm 14: 1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, "There is no God". They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.'
Speaker, author and evangelist Ray Comfort recently applied those words to self-proclaimed atheist Stephen Hawking on his weekday program, "The Comfort Zone."
"The Bible says he is a fool," Comfort said.
"You know, if we disagree with the Bible, when someone says, 'I'm an atheist,' they're saying, 'I'm a fool," Comfort added. "They're saying nothing created everything, which is just ludicrous intellectual suicide. The Bible says he who denies God's existence is a fool, and if we say the guy is intelligent, then we are denying what scripture said."
In September, Hawking, who is the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge, told the Spanish-language paper El Mundo that he does not believe in God because science provided more convincing answers to the origin of the universe.
However, Comfort, who is the president and CEO of Living Waters Publications, argues that proof of an intelligent designer is undeniable.
"It's like someone who sits in a 747 [airplane] and says I believe this happened when nothing exploded and everything fell into place," he explained. "Everything, the wings, all fell into place without a designer. That is ludicrous."
But not all Christians are fully in agreement with Comfort's assertions.
"I'm a Christian and a scientist. I've never understood people that think those two things must be mutually exclusive," commented a reader named Omphaloskepstix.
"Hawking is undeniably a brilliant man who has contributed much to the world of science. In addition, there is a broad view of how the earth came into being among Christians. At the same time, to say there isn't a God at all--yes, that is foolish thing to believe, but to call Hawking a fool in his entirety--that's a little unfair."
"I don't think our human minds can fully understand how God/Science works. That's the beauty of faith. I think if you personally want to know who God is, ask God to make it so obvious that you won't miss Him," adds another user named mom2AZM.
