David Price is one of the hottest commodities on the trade market this year. Numerous teams would like to bring him on, but some are for real, and others are a no-deal. One team that could be a serious contender for the coveted lefty is the New York Yankees.
According to ESPN, the Yankees are pulling out all the stops to make some noise by the trade deadline this year. Owner Hal Steinbrenner has made it perfectly clear he wants the Yanks to be a contender, and he is willing to deal in trades, and spend some money to get that done.
According to Jim Bowden at ESPN, Steinbrenner is prepared to provide GM Brian Cashman the resources he needs to make a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline. Obviously, the Yankees are very concerned they will be left out of the postseason party if they don't add a serious starter to the rotation. The Yankees' farm system is deep, but according to Bowden, they would decline trading Dellin Betances, probably the Rays' first choice, but they could help out with the need the Rays have at catcher.
"Yankees prospect Gary Sanchez would be the perfect acquisition in a Price deal. Sanchez would benefit from being developed behind the Rays' Ryan Hanigan, who did a great job influencing Devin Mesoraco in Cincinnati before his trade to Tampa Bay," Bowden writes.
This trade would see the Yankees up for years, with Masahiro Tanaka, Price and Michael Pineda in their rotation on long term deals.
The Yankees need pitching help, with CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Vidal Nuno suffering already this year. Adding an established ace to go along with Masahiro Tanaka, one of the leagues best, would give the Yankees an edge over the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. Currently, they are tied with the Orioles at 39-35, but both teams trail the Jay's by 1.5 games.
