Read: Daniel 4:28-37
Those who walk in pride he is able to humble. (v. 37)
Nebuchadnezzar went from the palace to the pasture soon after arrogantly proclaiming, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” (v. 30). These were the arrogant words that came from his lips moments before God’s judgment fell on him. This mighty king was driven from society and ate grass like the cattle. He had ignored God’s warning through Daniel. Only when he humbled himself was he restored.
The Bible is clear on this Thanksgiving Day: we are to live lives of humble gratitude. We must acknowledge God as the source of every blessing rather than credit ourselves. Our health, job, faith, family, church, friends—even the Thanksgiving delicacies—are gifts from God. Today is a day to thank him with our hearts and voices. Every day is an opportunity to thank him with our lives.
Daniel 4 ends with a great change of attitude from the king. Sadly, chapter 5 tells us that Nebuchadnezzar’s son did not learn from his father, and his arrogance cost him his life. Humble yourselves before the Lord, says the Bible, and he will lift you up (James 4:10 NIV).
Prayer: We praise and thank you, King of heaven, because all your ways are just. Amen.
