TIME magazine recently released the top ten news stories of 2008. With most of the stories on disasters and conflicts, two stories took place in China: poisonous milk powder incident and the Sichuan earthquake disaster.
In this year filled with disasters, Chinese nationals and those overseas reflected on the way to face sufferings. Meanwhile, As the Christians from around the world, in particular the Chinese Christians, provided material support and offered prayers for the victims, they’ve also expressed the need for the Chinese people to repent and to seek for God.
In response to these two incidents, Chinese Christians in China reflected deeply and took the necessary actions. On October 27, The Gospel Herald reported that Christian Communications Hong Kong shared at their monthly prayer meetings for China the moral dilemmas that the Chinese face and urged the participants to pray for the society and the churches.
Immediately after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sichuan, Christians from around the world collected enormous amount of funds and to help aid the disaster-stricken zone, and they’ve also gathered to offer their prayers for the victims who suffered in this catastrophe.
The largest prayer gathering was held in Hong Kong, where over 2,000 people that included pastors, regular church-goers, and high-level government officials participated. In addition, hundreds of Chinese ministers gathered at the San Francisco Ocean Beach to pray for China, hoping that the people in their motherland can get to know God through the sufferings.
