New York - March 12, "Garden of Hope" held an open lecture titled "Aspects of Domestic Violence" in Flushing Library, aiming to help the Chinese new immigrants out of domestic violence, which has been one of the main problems in the Chinese-American immigrant communities.
Garden of Hope invited speakers from the fields of psychology, social work, police and other related domains. In the lecture, the speakers encouraged the ones living under domestic violence not to keep silence, but to stand up and call out for help.
According to clinical psychologist Xiao-chun Jin, one of the main speakers of the lecture, the proportion of domestic violence is very high in Asian-American communities. However, according to the data from social workers, 95% violators stopped using violence to their family after they got arrested and received counseling from social workers.
Garden of Hope is the only social service organization which focuses on helping the new immigrant women who are under domestic violence. Founded by an American missionary Angie Golmon in Taiwan, 1988, Garden of Hope started its ministry in the States in May 2004, while they established their first office in Flushing, New York City. As most Chinese new immigrants are gathering in Flushing, Garden of Hope wishes to "serve the Chinese community in the New York Metropolitan area by providing ulturally sensitive services in Chinese."
