Nintendo's Metroid Prime 4 announcement surprised everyone at E3 2017. The Japanese gaming company said its fourth Metroid game is now in development for Nintendo Switch. A short teaser for the game is now available on YouTube.
In the past few years, Nintendo made announcements via pre-recorded Directs and live streams. Everyone thought the Japanese gaming company would not be present in E3 2017, but the opposite happened, Nintendo successfully made noise in this year's gaming convention.
A short teaser presented during the conference showed a "4" over a galactic-themed background. It was followed by the familiar Metroid Prime theme and logo. Before the clip ends, it confirmed the game is now in the works for Nintendo Switch.
There's no announcement regarding Metroid Prime 4 gameplay, release date, or new characters. However, an Amazon listing says the game would be released on December 28, 2019. Numerous gaming analysts also predict the same release window. Paul Tassi of Forbes claims Metroid Prime 4 will hit gaming shelves on holiday 2018 or early 2019.
The last Metroid game, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, was released ten years ago for Wii. So, the announcement of its successor is a delightful news for avid followers of the franchise.
Metroid Prime is known for its long, thoughtful, first-person missions. Behind Samus' visor, players can wander around and solve puzzles by observing the environment. Interestingly, there are rumors that the Prime 4 will allow users to look around using the Switch tablet.
Aside from the fourth Metroid, Nintendo also announced a 3DS remake of the 1991 Game Boy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus. Dubbed as "Metroid: Samus Returns," this 3Ds game is an improved 2D side-scrolling action/exploration game. Samus Returns' release date is scheduled for Sept.15. MercuryStream is now finishing the game. There will be special edition that includes the game itself and a CD with soundtracks.
In terms of storyline, Prime 3: Corruption takes place before the events of Metroid II, the newly announced titles could tie the loose ends of Samus' narrative. The two games might answer what Samus does after she beat Dark Samus.
Over the years, Metroid Prime series earned praises from gamers and critics. The first three games racked up 90+ scores on Metacritic. The franchise also won numerous Game of Year awards and was applauded for its special effects, detailed graphics, and varied environments.
