The Philadelphia Eagles took a chance at Carson Wentz last NFL season as they released Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings to pave the way for the rookie. While Nick Foles earlier expressed his support for the younger quarterback, offers from other football teams might be too tempting for the veteran. Is this the right time to think about a cheap Johnny Manziel contract?
The former Cleveland Browns star had been out of the NFL since 2015 following his issues off the field. With reports of legal disputes, uncontrolled partying and missed team practices plaguing Johnny Football during his stint with the league, his free agency earned practically zero interest. However, things may have changed for the former Heisman trophy winner. For one, more experts seem to be on his side and are voicing their support for a second chance.
“NFL teams should be interested in Johnny Manziel for a number of reasons,” said Cris Carter of the controversial quarterback. The former wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Minnesota Vikings and the Miami Dolphin further explained, “The No. 1 reason is that there’s 64 backups in the NFL.”
He added, “You’ve got 32 starters, most team have at least two backups. Are there 64 better quarterbacks than Johnny Manziel in the world? No. And that’s just a pure breakdown of the numbers. But this is a fact also. Johnny Manziel is in a population of people in the United States - over 24 million people are addicted to either alcohol or drugs. And only 10 percent of us get treatment on a regular basis. Now Johnny’s been yelling for help for three years. He finally got some help.”
The Philadelphia Eagles are looking into building around Carson Wentz. Unlike the Dallas Cowboys, however, they refused to make the rookie the sole go-to quarterback – an approach different from the treatment of Dak Prescott last season. Coming into the second year for their prized star, rumors are rife that the Nick Foles team aims to sign a good backup capable of picking up the pace from Carson Wentz.
At the moment, no official comment has been given by the parties tagged in this NFL rumor. Right now, a Johnny Manziel contract to the Philadelphia Eagles remains at the speculation stage. Apart from possibly playing with Carson Wentz, other teams reportedly interested in the return of Johnny Football is the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.
