Yasmin Seweid reported that on December 1, she was verbally abused by three white men on the subway at around 10 p.m. Sharing her ordeal on her Facebook page - which has been taken down - Yasmin narrates how the three men were shouting "Donald Trump."
"They were surrounding me from behind and they were like, 'Oh look, it's an f---ing terrorist,'" Seweid said, according to CBS. "I didn't answer. They pulled my strap of the bag and it ripped, and that's when I turned around and I was really polite and I was like, 'Can you please leave me alone?' And everyone was looking, no one said a thing, everyone just looked away."
But two weeks later, the police has arrested Yasmin Seweid because she has admitted to fabricating the story. She appeared at the Manhattan Criminal Court for her arraignment sporting a shaved head. Her parents, who are Egyptians, ordered it as her punishment for bringing shame to the family.
Apparently, after she reported the supposed hate crime, she went missing but was later found safe at a friend's house. Reports are that she lied about the incident as she was afraid to tell her family the truth of why she was home late, she was out drinking with her friends and did not want to be punished for not being home in time for curfew.
As police have exhausted resources in trying to find out who were the three persons who harassed her only for Yasmin to recant her testimony, she was charged with not only filing a false report but also of obstructing governmental administration.
Sources from the police say that arresting her is not something that they would usually do, but since she had many opportunities to tell the truth but still chose to lie and stick to her false story, they needed to charge her.
Four years ago Yasmin's older brother, Abdoul, also reported a false incident to the police. He reported that his friend was assaulted by three white males. Instead, he was charged with breaking into cars to steal.
Yasmin Seweid could spend up to a year in jail for the charges filed against her.
