League sources have confirmed that C.J. Anderson will be out for a couple of weeks after suffering an injury during the Denver Broncos' Week 7 game against the Houston Texans. But, depending on the results of a second opinion, the running back could sit out the rest of the year.
Anderson got hurt during the Broncos' final play of the first quarter on Monday. This happened as he was making his 11-yard run for the play. But, he was still able to return to finish the game and help the Broncos secure a 27-9 win over the Texans.
However, following the match, Anderson was evaluated and it was revealed that he had suffered a bruised bon one his right knee. Based on his current condition, he will not be able to play for Denver when they take on the San Diego Chargers at Week 8, according to NFL reporter Mike Garafolo.
On Wednesday, the Broncos sent out Anders to get a second opinion on his injury. Although the results of the second medical checkup hasn't been revealed, this kind of condition could put him out for the rest of the year.
As a running back, Anderson heavily relies on his lower body to take him down the field. But with an ailing knee, the athlete's fate for the rest of the season remains uncertain.
"We're just really trying to evaluate it more than anything," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He played with it. He did it early in the game. He played through it, he played really well."
"Actually, he was our offensive MVP," he added. "He came in really sore the day after. So we're trying to evaluate where he's at right now."
In preparation for Anderson's long absence, the Broncos will most likely turn to his backup Devontae Booker to start in the game against the Chargers. They will also have Kapri Bibbs on standby in case something happens to Booker.
As noted by quarterback Trevor Siemian, although he would still like to see Anderson back on the field he is confident that Booker and Bibbs will be able to perform well in the upcoming games.
"Book is a stud and he's been running really well for us the last couple of weeks," he said. "Hopefully we get C.J. back again because you would like to have two that are playing really well. But I have a lot of confidence in Book, Kapri and whoever else is back there."
