When LG G5 was released earlier this year, many tech enthusiasts had high expectations for its one-of-a-kind modular design. However, the smartphone did not perform well in the market. According to latest reports, LG may ditch the modular design in G5's successor, presumably called G6.
The modular design of G5 allows users to attach phone accessories like camera grip and digital-to-analog audio converter. These add-ons give the smartphone an additional functionality. Because it was an attempt that was not done before to other smartphones, gadget lovers were excited for the LG G5. However, LG Electronics was not able to reach its target sales for the smartphone.
The phone itself has no issues, but rather the modules are expensive and require the phone to restart before using. So, the company has to go back to the drawing board to conceptualize the successor of LG G5.
A report from ETNews suggests the 2017's G6 would not have any modular accessories. The specs of the unannounced smartphone are not yet revealed, but we expect it will have better processor and better camera features than the G5. Also, It is rumored that G6 will boast new functions that were not seen in previous LG phones.
Interestingly, CNET says abandoning the concept of modular phone would be a blow to developers and consumers, who bought the expensive accessories on the assumption that it would be enhanced further.
For rumored specs of LG G6, it might be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 processor to boost its computing abilities. In addition, it might come with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
The LG G6 could also retain the always-on display of G5. The feature allows users to see immediately the current date, time and battery status of the phone if even it is off.
This year's G5 was launched in April 1. LG does not usually deviate from its release cycle. So we might see the LG G6 in spring 2017, probably in the last week of March or first week of April.
The same source from ETNews also says the outline of G6 could be announced very soon. Officials of LG Electronics are reportedly looking now for potentials partners and major products that will be used for G6. In addition, the development team is currently busy with preparations for the release of the phone next year.
