Sony has announced that it will conduct a routine maintenance on the PlayStation Network next week. However, many players are having difficulty logging into the service right now. A report from CNN says a coordinated cyberattack has hit a large portion of internet that made services like Twitter, Netflix and PlayStation Network inaccessible.
Earlier Friday, distributed denial-of-service attacks hit domain name system (DNS) service Dyn. A DDOS attack is an attempt to bombard a website with so much traffic to make it inaccessible. The first attack lasted for a few hours, but it has returned to affect larger sector of the internet.
DNC service Dyn supervises website domains and routes internet traffic. According to Jeremiah Grossman of cybersecurity startup SentinelOne, if one of these DNS services went down, it can disrupt a large number of online services and websites.
Some of the affected websites are Vox, Reddit, Etsy, Github and Spotify.
As of now, no one has claimed responsibility for the series of DDOs attacks. An FBI official said the agency is looking at all possible scenarios including cyber activity.
On Twitter, Sony acknowledged the log-in issues of the PlayStation Network. They advised gamers to remain patient as they are investigating the server problem.
Most of the PS3 and PS4 users are having difficulty signing into the gaming service to launch their games. In addition, there are complains in single-player and multiplayer games that require stable connection to the server.
Currently, many players claim that the network is now running again in their respective regions. To check the current server status of PlayStation Network, visit this link.
