Johnny Football has been out of job ever since the Cleveland Browns cut him in the offseason. As a free agent, the former Heisman Trophy winner attracted the likes of the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and San Francisco 49ers. However, none of the pro football teams felt confident enough to sign him into a contract due to his unpredictable behavior off the gridiron. Will the Philadelphia Eagles prove them wrong?
Rumors are rife that the Philadelphia Eagles are wary over letting Chase Daniel mentor Carson Wentz as a pro quarterback in the league. The third stringer had not been in the picture throughout the offseason, thereby making fans of the NFL team anxious of his sudden rise as backup. Hence, a number of Philadelphia Eagles supporters feel that a Johnny Manziel contract might be worth the risk.
"The whole time all along, I was just getting ready for whenever this time would come," said Carson Wentz following the announcement of his starting role. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback added, "I knew I was ready. I knew I was taking the mental reps, being out the last couple of weeks, even going out to the first preseason game. I was developing at a fast pace and now it's here. I'm confident in myself, I'm confident in this team. I'm excited for it."
Doug Pederson echoed the sentiments, noting that the Philadelphia Eagles saw the potential of Carson Wentz to immediately lead the team. According to the head coach, the rookie is prepared to take over the reins and pick up where Sam Bradford abruptly left off.
"This is why we drafted him," shared Pederson of Wentz. He further said, "Would the ideal situation be later than sooner? Sure. But right now where we are, we've got a good football team around him, got a great defense, special teams, offensive line, good runners. All the pieces are here for him to be successful and for us to win some games."
While the Philadelphia Eagles are confident in Carson Wentz, fans feel that they can boost their chances in the league if they sign a Johnny Manziel contract. At this point, though, no official comment has been given by any of the parties concerned. Johnny Football remains unsigned and is still a free agent.
