The San Francisco 49ers are looking into a Trevor Siemian trade following the disappointing performance of both Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. Given the abundance of quarterbacks in the Denver Broncos, with both Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch also vying for the top role, Chip Kelly feels that signing the former Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler backup could help the NFL team. Moreover, this trade gives Trevor Siemian a huge chance of actually becoming a starter.
Mark Sanchez had been shipped from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Denver Broncos via trade this offseason. Since he already worked with Chip Kelly in the former DeMarco Murray roster, it is highly unlikely for the now San Francisco 49ers head coach to root for him especially since he chose Sam Bradford over the ex-New York Jets leader last season. Meanwhile, Paxton Lynch is still too inexperienced to lead in the regular season. This leaves the Trevor Siemian trade as the best option for the San Francisco 49ers.
"We've got three quarterbacks, two of which weren't on this team last year," explained Gary Kubiak when asked of the decision on who will be the starting quarterback. The Denver Broncos head coach added, "One has one regular-season snap. So I knew this was going to take some time, and I think it's a credit to them in how well they've battled and pushed each other. It's down to the nitty gritty here - I don't have to but I'm going to make a decision next week.''
The preseason is expected to reveal a starter quarterback for the NFL teams without a clear leader unlike the New England Patriots who have Tom Brady, Carolina Panthers with Cam Newton, Indianapolis Colts with Andrew Luck and Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson. Although Trevor Siemian has been showing flashes of brilliance in the gridiron, some Denver Broncos fans prefer Mark Sanchez over him. In fact, others even seriously consider Paxton Lynch as a better starter than the former third stringer.
Despite this, the San Francisco 49ers appear to still be interested in signing Trevor Siemian. While the NFL trade rumor remains uncertain as none of the parties involved have commented on the matter, the Chip Kelly squad is said to be considering putting both Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick behind the Denver Broncos quarterback.
"It's not like Gabbert offers a ton of upside. He played OK for a while last season, but he's nobody's idea of a high-end starting quarterback," noted Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports. He added, "Kaepernick actually has been a high-end starting quarterback, but after two down seasons and a wasted preseason to this point, those days seem long ago."
What do you think? Can Chip Kelly turn Trevor Siemian into a first-stringer in the San Francisco 49ers? Should the team give up on Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert?
