We all know that Marvel is doing very well with films based on its intellectual property, not to mention all of the shows that are appearing on Netflix. It stands to reason that there are more Marvel heroes that are making their way to television, and I'm not talking about the new X-Men Legion series. Now another group of Marvel heroes are making their way into a television series with Runaways. This is what is known about Hulu's adaptation of Marvel Comics Runaways to a new series with its release date and news.
Runaways will be adapted by those who adapted Gossip Girl for television by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Yes, it was a book series, and Runaways was a graphic novel series. Runaways was originally created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, and it was actually considered for a movie for a while.
If you have never heard of Runaways, then you might not be into comics. I haven't been into comics for a while, but a friend of mine introduced me to Runaways, and it has everything that I used to read comics for.
Runaways is about six teenagers who have parents who are all friends. Every once in a while, these kids' parents meet together to do...they don't know what. So these teenagers sneak around and discover that their parents are into some seriously sick stuff that involves human sacrifice.
As it turns out, the kids (Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly, and Nico) had parents that are from different walks of life, and they are villains who have banded together for world domination for a group known as The Pride.
The teenagers then decide that they can only run away, and while they are on the run they discover that, as the progeny of supervillains, they have special abilities too. In fact, one of them discovers they can take control of Deinonychus dinosaur, and so they decide to take on superhero code-names as well.
The book is an excellent display of how the superhero team book has not been done to death. The series also had a brilliant way of realistically showing teenage angst and create an interesting plot with a lot of imagination as well.
One of the things that made the comic book series interesting is that there is a big twist, and it is debatable this turn is properly set up. Considering that most adaptations from Marvel properties take certain creative liberties, they could do the same thing.
The one great aspect of Runaways is that it could exist apart from the Marvel Universe, and the storyline could happen apart from Marvel's Cinematic Universe as well. There isn't any specific release date for Runaways, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
