World War Z was a film based on Max Brooks anthology novel, but very little in the film save for the title has anything to do with its source material. In fact, production of the adaptation was a big mess with reshoots and all the mess that goes into what happens when Hollywood is not happy with the first cut, and the film's reviews when it finally hit is release date were mixed at best. The film certainly set itself up for a huge sequel, and this is what is known about World War Z 2 release date and news.
Most who saw the original film remember Brad Pitt being in the first film, and journeying around the world in the search for a cure to the zombie plague. Not to be too much of a spoiler, but the only thing that Brad Pitt's character found was a way to keep the zombies from attacking you. There was actually some development in the war that seemed like humans would be victorious, but nothing that would indicate something anything final.
Originally, the sequel to the zombie apocalypse film was going to be J.A. Bayona, the director of The Orphanage. However, this director was offered the Jurassic World sequel, and I guess he wanted that.
It appears that Brad Pitt has found his next director, and it might be one that Brad Pitt has worked with on two occasions: David Fincher. David Fincher is quite a successful director who did Se7en as well as Fight Club, both featuring Brad Pitt in a starring role, and the latter created the iconic Tyler Duerden.
Apparently, David Fincher hasn't done a film since Gone Girl, and his films have a very specific style. For some reason, I always associate the color of very dark green as films like Panic Room and The Game have this kind of dark look, feel, and tone to them. One of his first films was Alien3, and the director has described that project as very difficult, so he might not be up on doing sequels.
Having Fincher on board would be a definite shot in the arm to this franchise. One of the problems with this franchise is that zombies have been done to death, no pun intended. They are already given a lot of screen time on The Walking Dead, but if anyone can breathe needed life into World War Z, it is Fincher. Perhaps he will make World War Z 2 more like the book, which was essentially a journal of the war against the undead. For that, you wouldn't even need Brad Pitt, who had a character that was made up for the movie.
