"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson has said that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will be absolved of all his past scandals and indiscretions if he truly converts to Christianity and repents of his sins.
"The ultimate for America would be we convert Mr. Trump. That way, all the dirt they're gonna drag up on him, and whatever indiscretions he's been involved in, and the sins he's committed - if he'd be born again, he could then tell them, 'That's the old me, I've been born again. This is the new Donald Trump,'" the "Duck Commander" says in a video shared by Raw Story.
"Now that would send a shockwave through America," Robertson contended. "I say, the left wingers would be jumpin' out of buildings. I don't even know if that's possible or not, but it's just a thought."
While the Louisiana native previously endorsed Texas Senator Ted Cruz, he revealed he's now backing the billionaire businessman, as he believes Trump is a better choice than Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.
"Trump is who the people said they want, they said, 'We want him,'" Robertson continued. "I'm like, 'I know Hillary Clinton's record, cuz she has one - a long one. I'm looking at her record saying, 'No.' I look over at Trump, and I said, 'Well, he doesn't have a record. Hmm. I hear what he says, I see what he does.'"
Robertson also imagined being named Trump's "spiritual adviser" in his White House.
"We need to convert Trump for sure...if he's not converted...I'm going with the unknown rather than someone I know. Him, I'm not sure about, but her, I know her," he said of Clinton. "I said, 'I'm going with this dude here and taking my chances.'"
In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 70-year-old reality star said he will always vote on the Republican ticket due to his views on abortion.
"I'll go with the platform that I discovered when I was 28," he said. "I looked at the Democrats and the Republicans, and at least the Republicans aren't for killing their children or for perversion, so I'm a Republican. So I'll back old Donald."
Meanwhile, the Republican National Convention kicks off tonight in Cleveland as the GOP readies to make Trump's presidential nomination official. Willie Robertson, CEO of Duck Commander and son of Phil Robertson, is slated to speak on Monday night.
The younger Robertson endorsed Trump back in January, praising his extensive business experience and dedication to preserving the family.
"Our system is broken...I think a lot of the politicians are just more of the same. I want someone in there who can shake it up...I like a man who puts his money where his mouth is and isn't in debt to anyone...I think [Trump's] the man for the job," he told Fox News earlier this year.
"He's run a business and I think, you know, so many of these people come in. They've never run a business. They don't know what they're doing when they get there, and I just like somebody who's run a business, especially New York City. I think that's an advantage. I think you couldn't be that successful in New York City without having to be able to work with different kinds of people, and I think he's done that and I think he will actually work with other people," Willie said.
When asked about Trump's often controversial statements, Robertson laughed and said, "I grew up with Phil, so I'm used to that."
He added, "[I like Trump's] non-nonsense attitude. We need somebody tough."
