With all the hype of the Marvel movies, it is terrific to see Netflix invest quite a bit in these shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and also the Punisher. It would appear that The Defenders if going to bring all of these heroes together, but what will they do? Well, they will either live out the famous Daredevil "Born Again" plotline, or fight each other.
According to Movie News Guide, the rumors are pretty strong that Season 3 of Daredevil will attempt the classic "Born Again" plotline. If you are not familiar with that famous storyline, it was a written by comic master Frank Miller, and it was when Karen Page told the Kingpin that Matt Murdock is Daredevil, selling his secret identity for a drug fix. As a result, the Kingpin single-handedly ruined Matt's life from the inside out, and eventually sent a drug-enhanced assassin named Nuke.
The comic book story ended after Captain America got involved, but it is clear that these Netflix Marvel shows probably won't cross over with the Avengers films, in spite of these series taking place within the same connected universe.
The issue is that it seems like this plotline is being set up. There is a scene in Daredevil Season 2 where Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is facing the Kingpin Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) in prison. Fisk gets pretty rough with Murdock, and threatens to tear down Murdock and Nelson. Oh what else was set up for "Born Again" in Season 2? Oh yes, Karen Page learned that Matt Murdock (Deborah Ann Woll) is Daredevil!
Granted, the Karen Page on the show hasn't gone into drugs, but she has done some behavior like killing Wilson Fisk's best friend. She also some kind of past troubles in her teenage years that the show hasn't gone into detail about. So, is a drug addiction plotline in store for her.
Then there was another possible "Born Again" plot building block in Jessica Jones, Season 1. A character named Will Simpson (Wil Traval) was released, and he is clearly the drug-fueled warrior known as Nuke.
Next up for the Netflix Marvel Universe is Luke Cage, and although that will take place in Harlem instead of Hell's Kitchen, it should be interesting what kind of story elements will show up there, if any. That show begins in September 30, and the next show, Iron Fist, is probably due to show up in early 2017.
Then there is The Defenders, where all four of these heroes are getting together. It is possible that perhaps there is going to be a "Born Again" plot will be set up where the villains team up and try and take out the heroes from the inside out.
There is, of course, another possibility, and I am surprised that I didn't suggest it before, being 2016. Have you noticed that many of the big superhero films like Captain America: Civil War and Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice have superheroes fighting each other? So why not have Jessica Jones and Daredevil fight each other? Power Man versus Iron Fist? All you need is some minor reason, and then have the heroes figure out that they are on the same side, and go after the real bad guys. It is a classic comic book plotline.
