That is, they have to help Trico by treating his injuries, and the animal reacts like a real animal would. There will be times where the boy will need to fight off the enemies, or sometimes Trico has to be sent to take out the guards. There is a possibility that the game could end very sadly, with the boy or Trico could die at the end, but there is no confirmation of that.
It would appear that The Last Guardian is the start of a human and animal player type of game, like a game known as Scalebound is coming exclusively to the Xbox One. The Last Guaridan will arrive exclusively on the PS4 on October 25. Hopefully, this game will not be delayed, or the fans will again be outraged by another one.
