‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot Release Date Update: Alicia Vikander To Play Lara Croft

The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996, and it became a First Person Shooter (FPS) video game sensation as players would shoot their way through obstacles as the buxom, beautiful, and bewildering Lara Croft.  It has been a while since Angelina Jolie played this now iconic character in films with Tomb Raider (2001) and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003), but Lara Croft will return to the big screen again, played by Alicia Vikander.  This is what is known about the Tomb Raider Reboot Release Date and News.

Alicia Vikander could give the character of Lara Croft a different feel.  The entire video game series was rebooted in 2013, with a much younger Lara Croft in the lead.  This Lara Croft feels grittier, very different from the not-so-spoiled rich girl that debuted in a spotless tank top during the nineties, not to mention having more realistic proportions in the chest region.  The reboot of the video game spawned the sequel of Rise of the Tomb Raider, which was just released recently.

Vikander is a Swedish actress who has had quite a year last year in hit films like Ex Machina, The Danish Girl and The Man from U.N.C.L.E..  She will also be appearing in the new Jason Bourne movies, so she is no stranger to blockbusters.

There isn't much known about the Tomb Raider reboot, as the imdb page has little to no information about it other than the director, Roar Uthaug, currently most well-known for the Drama of The Wave.  The film's description is just "archaeologist Lara Croft sets off on a series of international adventures".

Hopefully, these adventures will be a bit more...serious than the first two films.  The first Tomb Raider opened up with a scene of Lara Croft battling with a robot in an underground tomb setting that turned out to be in her mansion.  There is a certain insipid nature to a scene like that ruined a very high-quality production design movie, but at least it secured Angelina Jolie a place on the A-List, as she played the role pretty well.

When Jolie returned for Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, it opened with a scene of her being trapped underwater.  How does she get out?  She cuts her hand, some blood attracts a shark, and then she punches the shark in the nose.  Why does she do that?  So she can ride the shark to the surface, of course.   Then she goes and find's Pandora's Box, and...yeah, those two Tomb Raider films were kind of ridiculous.

Hopefully, the Tomb Raider reboot will disregard the things that made the first two films nearly forgotten, and concentrated on good gritty action with an Indiana Jones vibe.  A better vibe than Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, of course.
