Maybe you've seen Bridget Jones' Diary or Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason. If you were a fan of either of those movies, you might be happy to know that after 14 years, Renée Zellweger will reprise her role of Bridget in a third movie called Bridget Jones's Baby.
The trailer for this new film was released on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday. From this trailer, we can deduce that Bridget Jones is single, and still clumsy.
Since the last Bridget Jones sequel was so long ago, not since 2004 have we seen the movies based on the novels by Helen Fielding in the theater, here is a little refresher of where Bridget Jones last left us. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which didn't do very well with critics, and scored a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, wrapped up with Jones getting engaged to Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth). This happened after she finally got rid of her off-again, on-again relationship with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). There was also the strange scenario of her ending up in a Thai prison due to her accidental cocaine smuggling- true to life, Thailand highly frowns upon drug smuggling. They consider it even worse than murder because while murder might result in one death, drugs kill many more.
So, in the trailer for the new movie, it appears that Bridget is not married to Mark anymore, or she didn't get married to him (only in her dreams?). She's once again living the single life, but discovers that she's pregnant, and apparently, there's a possibility of Mark being the father, or is he? She brings Mark to the ultrasound, but asks her doctor (played by Emma Thompson) for a favor. The next thing we see is Patrick Dempsey, McDreamy himself, as another possibility of being the other baby daddy.
Dempsey told Entertainment Weekly, of working on this film, "It all happened very quickly. It's completely reinvigorated me. I've enjoyed it immensely, getting back to something that has a beginning, middle, and end. It's just a completely different approach. With Grey's, you're just grinding it out. In this instance, you take the time to get through things."
According to EW people have been critical. One of the film's producers, Eric Fellner, told them, "We get a lot of rubbish thrown at us. When we were making a second film, we were asked, 'Why? How's that going to work?' On this film it's 'Are the people too old? Blah blah blah.' You've just got to stick with what you believe and hope it works."
The trailer looks very similar to the romantic comedy equations that have been typical of the past Bridget Jones movies. But I'm guessing that fans of the movie and the books won't care that much. Sometimes people just need mindless comedies, and Zellweger has been proven to be able to provide that.
Bridget Jones's Baby will be coming to U.S. theaters September 16, 2016.
