The new Tomb Raider reboot has been in the works for a while. Warner Bros and MGM got together with Roar Uthaug back in November to direct the film, and Transformers 5 writer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, writing the script. Although, there isn't an official say of who will be taking the lead acting role of Laura Croft, there has been talk, and Deadline says that Daisy Ridley is a possible candidate to take over the role former played by Angelina Jolie.
Daisy Ridley is somewhat of a newcomer to the movie scene, but she brought womanly strength to her onscreen character of Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where she was chosen by J.J. Abrams- seemingly similar to how George Lucas chose actors who were relatively unknown for the big roles in the first Star Wars film.
IGN interviewed the director of the reboot movie, and Uthaug confirmed that it will be an origin story, the 2013 video game being similar. He stated that he wants Lara croft to be relatable, saying, "I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."
He is a fan of the Tomb Raider video game- having played it since 1996, when it first came out. He likes the strong characteristics of Lara Croft as a female character. "I've always been a fan of strong female characters, and I think I've had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that's something I thought was interesting."
The first Tomb Raider film, although doing well at the box office, didn't bode well with critics. It only has a 19 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There was a sequel in 2003- Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, which also received mostly negative reviews, but critics thought it was better than the first one. Roger Ebert gave the film 3 out of 4 stars. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 24% rating. Angelina Jolie was praised for her role in both movies.
Ridley, 23, is also making news for standing up against a meme body-shaming her Rey character on social media, according to Mashable. The meme that spread was a picture of her Star Wars character Rey. The meme creator altered the picture with a speech bubble, making her appear to be saying, "I can't believe the unrealistic expectations I'm setting for young girls. Who cast me anyway? Don't they know real women have curves?"
Ridley responded in a post that retorted, "Real women are all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don't have families. I am a 'real woman' like every other woman in this world." She deleted the post after realizing the username of the person who posted the meme was seen on the post.
