San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has voiced his interest to leave his current team and move to the New York Jets next season. The quarterback also received some words of wisdom from former quarterback Steve Young about his future in the sports world.
According to New York Daily News, Kaepernick wanted out of 49ers following a "forgettable 2015," which encompassed struggles on the field, leading to benching midway and a coaching change. Sources told the publication that the quarterback preferred the Jets as his new team.
As per the sources, the Jets know and are intrigued by Kaepernick's thoughts of playing for them; however, the team is still in the initial stages of their offseason planning and evaluation. Recently, the Jets lost to the Bills that head coach Todd Bowles articulated his desire to bring back Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Bowles told New York Daily News that the Fitzpatrick's fourth quarter performance on Feb. 7 dulled the latter's season he had had for the Jets. According to reports, the quarterback, who is in his 11th year in the league, is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.
While Kaepernick is eager to play with the Jets in New York, he still has an ongoing $114 million extension contract with the 49ers, which includes emergency escapes for his present employer. This suggests that the Jets would have to trade for Kaepernick or wait until the termination of his contract.
According to Christian Post, Kaepernick had fallen out of favor of the new head coach Chip Kelly, who took over on Jan. 14. As per the publication, the quarterback and the coach are not in coach terms, which is intriguing as to why Kelly had not wanted the former to be his starter in the league.
Kaepernick is reportedly aware that his moments with the 49ers is going to end soon and with this, the quarterback wanted to trade or cut him for him to be able to change teams by the next season. Many have been shocked by the quarterback's decision since last year's reports revealed that he will not be returning to the Jets. However, things have reportedly changed after Kelly took over as coach.
Meanwhile, former 49ers quarterback Young gave his advice to Kaepernick about coach Kelly. In his interview with ESPN, Young said that if he was the quarterback and he was on the team when Kelly showed up, he was not going anywhere. Instead, he would ask the coach to teach him and show him how to score some points.
Young added that he would have gone to Kelly and tell him that whatever had happened last year, whatever he had seen, whatever he had thought had been a weakness in his game, whatever the holes, the cracks in the wall, he was going to fix.
While Kaepernick's move is unlike to happen for the time being, 49ers is still yet to decide if they want to keep their quarterback or trade him.
