With Tim Miller's Marvel Comics film "Deadpool" coming to theaters soon, it has been revealed why the film dodged the "X-Men" film timeline. Also, its sequel "Deadpool 2" is happening while Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, reveals he wanted the X-Force on the big screen.
Reynold's Deadpool appeared as Wolverine's enemy in Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," when the film was released on May 1, 2009. In their interview with Cinema Blend, "Deadpool" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said that they had made a very early decision to ignore the previous incarnation of the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," adding that they might not even ignore it, but make fun of it.
According to the writers, fans vision for Deadpool was the opposite of what they saw in the 2009 film, so the production team decided to slash the idea. Reese also pointed out that while the X-Men in "Days of Future Past" were set to work their present, they had already made a decision to include Colossus in Miller's "Deadpool," since the mutant had been misrepresented and had been slightly ignored in the past films.
Wernick added that the great thing about Deadpool was one could not only break all the rules, but one should break all the rules. For the writer, doing it allowed them to go just absolutely crazy with anything that came to their mind.
In other news, "Deadpool" is already in works, while Miller's "Deadpool" has not yet reached the big screen. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that 20th Century Fox was very willing for more "Deadpool" action and had given the greenlight for "Deadpool 2." As per the publication, Reynolds is set to return as the Merc with the Mouth while Reese and Wernick return to pen the screenplay.
Meanwhile, Reynolds gave his thoughts on the amount of the "X-Men" mythology that could still be infused to the films. In his interview with Film Starts, Reynolds said that the X-Force was his priority, and he wanted to get that in. The actor also mentioned that there was so much material to him in just the "X-Men" universe, and they were going to explore the X-Men a lot if they were doing a bunch more "Deadpool" films. This means that the X-Force could appear in "Deadpool 2."
"Deadpool" follows Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative who learns that he has a terminal illness and agrees to be a subject in a rogue experiment that gave him boosted healing powers and extraordinary skills set, leading him to adopt the alter ego Deadpool. Aside from Reynolds and Carano, the film stars Brianna Hildebrand, Rachel Sheen, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein, Rachel Sheen, Morena Baccarin, among others.
Miller's "Deadpool" hits theaters on Feb. 12.
