Google's latest version of its popular mobile operating system, the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, its finally making its way to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The tech giant has been testing the beta version of the new software with a small number of users in the past weeks and now it is slowly rolling out to all, starting in its native South Korea.
The final version comes out following a short test where users had to sign up in order to download the beta Marshmallow build on their handsets. The company initially said that the testing would end on February 18.
According to Samsung watcher site SamMobile, users on the Asian country's SK Telecom are getting the update first. Those who own units with build numbers G920SKSU3DPAC and G925SKSU3DPAC, for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, respectively, are now able to download the new OS.
Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow brings a whole bunch of user interface improvements to Samsung's current flagship handsets including new features such as Google Now on Tap, Android's latest app permissions system, and Doze, which provides better battery management. It also carries over under-the-hood upgrades that should deliver greater performance such as updated notification menu and power menu, as well as enabling the fingerprint sensor to support third party applications.
The latest Android version is only available for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in South Korea for the time being. But given Samsung's track record, more countries are expected to get the update in the next couple of weeks. Users can also can safely assume that the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 phablet will be the next models to receive Android 6.0.1.
Moving on to the another major Android OS supporter, HTC users who own some of the company's recent models are also in for a treat. While Android 6.0.1 is already out for the HTC One A9 units that have been sold unlocked, users of the metal-clad handset who got it from Sprint are now able to upgrade their device to the latest Android version. The carrier announced that software version 1.57.651.1 for the One A9 will bring with it the much awaited Android version 6.0.1.
Furthermore, owners of HTC's 2015 flagship smartphone in the UK, the HTC One M9, are also set to receive the new software. The company confirmed the roll out on Twitter, roughly a month after making it available on contract-less One M9 handsets in the US.
Aside from the above-mentioned features, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow brings a number of specific improvements to HTC's latest models including new emoji support, camera enhancements, and additional Wi-Fi calling functionality.
