Serena Williams eclipses Maria Sharapova at Australian Open. She is now advancing to the semifinals. Despite her momentous win against Sharapova again, she has nothing but good things to say about her opponent.
World's No. 1, Williams, gave Sharapova 55 minutes of her time and then blew the match open, winning 6-4, 6-1. She now has a solid place in the Australian Open semifinals. On Thursday, she will be fighting Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 4 seed from Poland. Like Williams, Radwanska has an eventful Tuesday too, beating Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain, 6-1, 6-3 in the first quarterfinal Tuesday.
Despite her win, Williams have nothing bad to say of Sharapova. In fact, she considers her a very worthy opponent, New York Times reported. "I like the way she hits the ball. Plus, when I play her, I know automatically I have to step up my game. I think that makes me play better," she said. Even though Sharapova gave her all on Tuesday, this was not enough to bring Williams down. But this does not mean Williams cannot see how good Sharapova is. She is even inspired with Sharapova. "It's obviously always frustrating, but it's motivating," Sharapova said. "It's tough to sit here 30 minutes after the match and, of course, talk about the match, But that's part of my job. It's motivating because she's at a different level and she makes you go back to the drawing board, not just for me but for many other players. She makes you work, and that's inspiring."
She is not going to bad mouth Radwanska either. She said that the upcoming match will certainly be a good one. She revealed that she has been observing the Polish player toward the end of the year and perceived how good Radwanska is. Williams even said Radwanska has been very consistently playing well this year. Williams is not bothered and is excited about the upcoming match, as ABC News reported. "She presents a completely different game, an extremely exciting game. So I think it will be a long match and it will be a good match to see where I am," she added.
Obviously, Williams is all about keeping a steady head on her shoulders, never letting her wins make her complacent. It can be remembered that a few months ago, she said that nothing can ever be guaranteed in sports. She added that she needed to win two matches against great players who are extremely tough.
