One Million Moms, a conservative activist group, has called for a boycott of the new CBS show "Angel from Hell," arguing that the "blasphemous" sitcom portrays Christianity "in a negative light."
"Angel from Hell" tells the story of Amy, played by LGBT activist Jane Lynch, the "not so good" angel, who acts as a guardian for a perfectionist named Allison. Over time, the two form an unlikely friendship. The new show airs on Thursday evenings at 9:30 pm ET/8:30 pm CT with a 14-DL rating.
OMM has criticized the show for its blasphemous content, citing in particular "rude humor, foul language and distasteful dialogue."
"This program is a new comedy that focuses on a holier-than-thou character who is anything but that," reads a petition from the group calling for a boycott. "The network also cast children in scenes that are extremely inappropriate, such as the angel using foul language in front of them and then joking that she never promised to be G-rated."
It references a disturbing scene, in which the "angel" hides liquor in children's clothes and says, "My booze!" followed by a little boy saying, "That's so cool!"
"Almost every scene included the angel drinking alcohol from a flask, even on Sunday, and once at a bar. Not to mention the angel rides on a wrecking ball while busting up a concrete angel statue," the petition notes.
"Once again networks like CBS portray a false image of religion. 'Angel From Hell' is another attempt to distort the truth about people's faith," it concludes.
Fox News notes that the advertiser Sleep Number pulled their sponsorship from the program and will not run any new ads in response to OMM's concerns.
The group is now urging supporters to contact Capital One and ask that they, too, pull their financial support for "Angel From Hell."
Dan Gainor, VP of business and culture for the Media Research Center, also slammed the new show, saying it is just another example of Hollywood's "war against faith."
"Rather than simply deny the divine, 'Angel From Hell' seeks to denigrate it," he told Fox. "They picked 'Glee' veteran Jane Lynch, who hates conservatives, to portray a disgustingly foul and perverted 'angel.'"
He compared "Angel from Hell" to a new show coming to Fox, "Lucifer", whose main character is the devil.
"With the arrival of the show 'Lucifer,' where the devil is portrayed as suave good guy, this is just the Left Coast's latest attack on religious faith," he said.
