The Toronto Blue Jays has just been defeated by the Kansas City Royals with a 4-3 loss in the recently concluded Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. The win gives the Royals their second consecutive AL pennant, allowing them to face the New York Mets in the upcoming World Series next week.
Kansas City were not able to conquer hard-to-kill Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 so they headed back to Kauffman Stadium for Game 6. At first, the Blue Jays were hopeful as they held off Kansas City's celebration for two times in a row with Wednesdays 7-1 Game 5 triumph. It was highlighted by pitcher Marco Estrada's three-hit gem over 7 2/3 innings. However, Toronto's hopes are finally crushed on Friday as Kansas City clinched their fourth victory in the ALCS' best-of-seven championship series.
During the 9th inning, Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin led off with a single against Royals' Wade Davis. Center fielder Dalton Pompey pinched runs and stole second and third base. However, Davis struck out catcher Dioner Navarro and outfielder Ben Revere. Eventually, the season ended when AL MVP candidate Josh Donaldson grounded out to third with runners on both second and third.
Some of the weird highlights of Game 6 involves a controversial moment in the second inning when a fan appeared to interfere with a home run off the bat of third baseman Mike Moustakas. Fox Sports also briefly caused a stir in the middle of the game when it accidentally flashed a graphic promoting a World Series match-up between the Mets and the Royals, right when the Royals are still playing against the Blue Jays.
The Royals were able to make it to the Series last year, but they were defeated by the San Francisco Giants after seven games. Their most recent, and only, World Series win was back in 1985, when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals. Meanwhile, upcoming opponent New York Mets last participated in the World Series fifteen years ago. The Mets won the Series in 1986.
The Kansas City Royals will be facing the New York Mets next week at the former's home turf, the Ewing M. Kauffmann Stadium. Here is the expected World Series game schedule; the last three games will push through only if necessary.
