New York Giants' Odell Beckham Jr. sustained a hamstring injury during his team's win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. However, he reportedly appears to be on course to play in Monday Night Football's Week 6 game versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants added Beckham Jr. in its list of questionable players, which already includes fellow wide receiver Rueben Randle and cornerback Prince Amukamara. A league source told NJ.com's Jordan Raanan about Beckham Jr.'s status and reported that the 22-year-old player has swelling in his hamstring area but still hopes to play on Monday night.
The team opted out of practice on Wednesday, but if they did the workout, Beckham Jr. would still not have participated. "The trainers seem to think he's made good progress. He wouldn't practice [Wednesday if there was one], no. Hopefully, we'll get some work in before the end of the week... All we can do is hold out with the fact that he is a very competitive young man and if it's at all possible, he'll be ready to play," coach Tom Coughlin said during a conference call with Philadelphia reporters.
The player got the hamstring injury late in Sunday's 30-27 victory over 49ers. As such, he was sidelined most of the final two drives. The team already lost wide receiver Victor Cruz so they are hoping that Beckham Jr. will recover in time for Monday's match.
On Wednesday, coach Coughlin mentioned that Cruz will not play against the Philadelphia Eagles and probably will not be prepared to make his 2015 return for several more weeks. The 28-year-old wideout has been dealing with a nagging left calf strain since mid-August and has not yet been cleared for practice.
"He's rehabbing, working indoors primarily working with a trainer. He's in every meeting, however, he has not been cleared to begin on the field." Coughlin said of the wide receiver's situation. Cruz was previously reported to be ready to participate in the fourth game of the season in Buffalo. However, he re-injured his left calf, where he tore his patellar tendon, on September 30.
Since Cruz will likely be out, and Beckham Jr. and/or Randle are uncertain to participate, the Giants may rely on remaining wide receivers in their active roster namely Dwayne Harris, Myles White, and Geremy Davis.
