Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and Marshmallow Upgrade Schedules For Samsung Galaxy S5, S6 Edge, Note 4, Note 5; Are Note 5 Edge Rumors true?

With Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the way, Samsung is poised to update its current lineup to the new firmware. Already, the South Korean firm has brought Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5. Meanwhile, rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note 5 Edge, or Note Edge 2, may be released this October.

When Android Marshmallow is Coming Out on Samsung

Although Google is expected to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow this fall, Samsung users will need to wait a little longer for the new technology to be available. That is because Google is going to make sure that Android Marshmallow will first be released on its proprietary Nexus Series.

Also, manufacturers such as Samsung will need time conduct soak test in order to work out the intricacies of the new firmware. Even so, Samsung remains generally consistent with new Android updates, whereas many of its competitors fail in that area.

Android 5.1.1 Updates Inconsistent with U.S. Carriers

Despite Samsung's efforts, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop updates have been spotty with U.S. wireless service providers.

The vast majority of American Galaxy S5 users are stuck on the older Android 5.0 Lollipop. Only T-Mobile has already upgraded its Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Happily, Android 5.1.1 updates for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are readily available. Subscribers of Verizon, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular have long received the new firmware over-the-air. For now, Sprint and AT&T users are still using the older Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Oddly, Sprint has rolled out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on the Galaxy Note 4, and it is the only carrier to do so.

Since the Galaxy Note 5 was released this year, it already comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop installed. That means users will only need to wait for the impending Android 6.0 Marshmallow roll out.

Galaxy Note 5 Edge (a.k.a. Note Edge 2) Release Date in Question

According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Note Edge 2 may not be coming out this year. Previously, it was believed that Samsung will be releasing the successor to its expensive curved-display Note Edge smartphone. Amongst the gossip circles, the device goes by either "Galaxy Note 5 Edge" or "Note Edge 2."

Samsung has not formally acknowledged the existence of such a device. So for now, the Galaxy Note Edge 2 exists in rumor alone.
