Motorola may be skipping ahead to Android 6.0 Lollipop on a number of its flagship devices, which means an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Moto lineup may never happen. In the meantime, a number of Motorola devices have gotten the earlier Android 5.1 Lollipop update. We will examine the update situation for the Motorola Moto G 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen; Moto E 2013 & 2014.
When Will Motorola Start Using Android 6.0 Marshmallow
According to Android Pit, Motorola may put priority on their latest handsets. Such devices include the Moto G (2015), Moto G (2014), Moto E 3rd Gen, Moto X (Pure Edition), Moto X Play and Moto X (2014). The publication stopped short of saying when Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be available.
However, Greek Snack predicted that Motorola may not start using Android 6.0 Marshmallow until next year. Naturally, this information is an educated guess and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Last week, Google rolled out the third and last version of the developer's edition of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. That means the upcoming Android OS will be available soon. Based on a number of factors, it will take time for Android Marshmallow to reach most consumers.
Naturally, those using Google's proprietary Nexus handsets will get their Android 6.0 updates first. The next process is for manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, LG and Motorola to start adopting the new Android. Afterwards, domestic wireless service providers will need to run soak tests before rolling out Android Marshmallow.
Motorola Moto G 1st Gen, 2nd Gen
The Moto G series is expected to receive the Android 5.1 Lollipop. Curiously, Motorola has released such an update for the 4G LTE version of the original Moto G.
Other Moto G variants that received Android 5.1 Lollipop include the unlocked Moto G 1st and 2nd Gen. These devices are sold thru Amazon and Motorola's online store.
The only U.S. carrier that has the Moto G in stock is Verizon, which has yet to announce plans for Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen
Unlike its predecessors, the Moto G 3rd Gen comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop preinstalled. The phone is currently being sold as unlocked at various U.S. merchants and retailers. At the moment, none of the major American carriers have this device in stock.
Moto E 2014, 2015
Motorola has already updated both the Moto E 2nd Gen and 1st Gen to the Android 5.1 Lollipop. Like the Moto G series, the Moto E is available only at Verizon. Happily, the carrier has updated the Moto E series to Android 5.1 Lollipop.
