Fall 2015 will see the release of new films in all genres imaginable. Choices range from political thrillers to children-orientated features. For this article, we will explore top films for this autumn.
Black Mass (September 18)
Johnny Depp stars as notorious Irish-American mobster Whitey Bulger, who was an informant to a corrupt FBI agent. Using his position, the gangster played the Bureau for years. During filming, Depp attracted media attention for drastically altering his appearance to better resemble Bulger. Stars include Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon and Dakota Johnson.
Everest (September 18)
Based on a real-life Mount Everest expedition that went horribly wrong, the film tells the familiar man-vs-nature tale. Everest features an all-star cast including Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley and Emily Watson.
Sicario (September 18) – Limited
The film stars Emily Blunt as a young FBI agent who is assigned to a secret CIA operation. What she experiences starts to challenge her moral and ethical values. According to the trailers, sicario means hitman in Mexico. Stars include Benicio Del Toro, Jon Bernthal, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan and Victor Garber.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
This is the sequel to the first Maze Runner film that did well at the box office in 2014. Dylan O’Brien stars as Thomas, who has left behind the mysterious Glade with his friends. The group finds that their escape was engineered by the nefarious WCKD organization. Thomas and crew are then forced to journey into the desolate Scorch.
The Martian (October 2)
Matt Damon stars as astronaut Mark Watney, who is left behind on Mars after an aborted mission. Everyone assumes Watney is dead, until he sends a signal back to Earth. This discovery sets off an international effort to bring him home. The only trouble is that Watney needs to survive in the four years it takes for help to arrive.
Legend (October 2) – Limited
The UK crime-thriller follows the rise of identical twins Ron and Reggie Kray, who lorded over London’s criminal underworld in the 1960s. Both characters are played by actor Tom Hardy. Legend is directed by Brian Helgeland, the writer of Academy Award-winning noir flick L.A. Confidential.
The Walk (October 9)
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt with a heavy French accent, The Walk is inspired by true events involving tightrope walker Phillipe Petit. Long before 9/11, Petit and his accomplices strong a cable across the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. He walked on the cable several times before police apprehended him. Petit later became the subject of the 2009 Academy Award-winning documentary Man on Wire.
Steve Jobs (October 9)
This is the second biopic about Steve Jobs that is coming out in recent years. According to the film’s official synopsis, the film is “set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter."
Bridge of Spies (October 16)
Tom Hanks stars as a lawyer who is given the impossible task of negotiating a prisoner swap between a Soviet spy and U.S. pilot shot down over the USSR. The Cold War-inspired film marks the fourth collaboration between Hanks and director Steven Spielberg.
Crimson Peak (October 16)
Acclaimed horror director Guillermo del Toro tells the tale of young author Edith Cushing who processes the ability to see spirits. She falls in love and marries Sir Thomas Sharpe, who resides in a spacious family house with his sister Lucille. Despite appearances, the siblings have knowledge of a dark secret.
Room (October 16)
The film is based on the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue. A young mother raises her young daughter in a room. Both live as virtual prisoners to an unknown captor. One day the daughter escapes, and police rescue the mother and child. However, the pair will have to learn to live in the unfamiliar world outside.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (October 23)
Ghost Dimension is the latest installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise. Those familiar with the series will recall Paranormal Activity’s found footage approach. Based on what was revealed in the trailer, the film is guaranteed to bring back the creep factor.
The Peanuts Movies (November 6)
Charles Schulz much-beloved classic comes to life in 3D for the very first time. Based on trailers, the creators have certainly captured the soul of Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Lucy, Sally, Pigpen and the rest of the Peanut Gang will be making an appearance as well.
Spectre (November 6)
James Bond is back for yet another mission on the behalf of Britain’s MI:6. The film introduces the iconic villainous organization Spectre, which may have links to Jame’s earlier missions. Daniel Craig reprises his role as the latest Bond actor. The villain will be played by Christoph Waltz, whose credits include Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds.
Trumbo (November 6) – Limited
Bryan Cranston stars as Hollywood screenwriter who has been blacklisted as a communist in the late 1940s. TV aficionados will remember Cranston for his leading performance in Breaking Bad. The movie is inspired by the true story of Dalton Trumbo, who managed to win two Academy Awards while being banned from the industry.
By the Sea (November 13)
Starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, this romantic drama tells the story of a couple who go on vacation to save their loveless marriage. The trailer suggests that the story will be filled with tension against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean. By the Sea is yet another film directed and written by Angelina Jolie.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (November 20)
This is the final installment in Hunger Games film series that is also based on the book franchise of the same name. Jennifer Lawrence stars as main heroine Katniss, who leads an armed insurrection against The Capitol.
Creed (November 25)
The latest chapter in the Rocky film series changes the focus from Rocky Balboa to the son of Adonis Creed, played by actor Michael B. Jordan. Stallone, who played Rocky throughout the franchise’s history, will stay on as Creed Jr.’s trainer.
The Good Dinosaur (November 25)
This new Disney-Pixar movie features an unlikely friendship between a human child and a dinosaur. That is the only detail revealed so far in the latest trailer.
