Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) has left the CIA in season 4 of Showtime's crime drama series Homeland and has settled in Berlin to raise her child as full-pledge civilian and working as the head of security for a philanthropist in Berlin, Germany.
Apparently, Carrie has moved on from Quinn (Rupert Friend), who is now believed to be making a living as an assassin.
Homeland executive producer and director Linka Glatter described Carrie's different environment in Homeland Season 5, "When you start off the season she's actually in kind of the best place we've probably seen her. She's out of the CIA, she's working for a humanitarian foundation. They deal with all different kinds of causes, as well as investigative journalism, and she's in a relationship and she's actually being a mother, and this all lasts for about five minutes. Poor thing. It's about five minutes before the ghosts of her past come to get her again. What's so exciting about being involved in this show is that every season it's a whole new reinvention, and that's thrilling."
In the official full-length trailer of Homeland's season 5, a security breach in the CIA caused the release of hundreds of highly-classified surveillance files and Carrie's former colleagues in the CIA suspected her as responsible.
The events quickly spiraled out of control and before you knew it, Carrie was declared as enemy of the state.
"Maybe I knew some day the past would catch up with me," Carrie uttered in the trailer. The trailer teased that the only way out is to get back in, explaining why Carrie cannot escape from her past as it would continue to haunt her. At one point, she was seen looking through a sniper's rifle before some men attacked her from behind and covered her head with a sack.
The trailer includes "whackings, bombs, creepy masks, infiltrations, fleeings through forests, double-crosses, sexy times, stranglings, kidnappings, and, for those needing a lighter moment, Carrie playing with doggie-shaped balloons and children," said EW.
Season Spoilers, Quinn And Carrie Reunites
In the next season of Homeland, Carrie will also face trouble on the work front as her German co-workers will doubt her allegiance. Even her new boss Otto Düring (Sebastion Koch), a well-known German philanthropist, will question her accountability to the firm and she will be suspected of being a spy who is gathering intelligence for the CIA, reported Design & Trend.
Some reports also indicated that Carrie will be reunited with Quinn. To recall, the two shared an intriguing kiss at the end of season 4 before parting ways. In the teaser, Carrie could be seen helping Quinn who was apparently injured and said, "Come on, stay with me."
Homeland producer Alex Gansa said that writers of the show are still trying to figure out a way to provide a romantic link between Carrie and Quinn. He told TV Line, "How much is just that they recognize each other so well? How much is the desire for both of them to move on past this job that they do. Those are the questions that we're wrestling with. We wrestled with them last season. We're wrestling with them again."
Homeland returns Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
