Spider-Man Reboot 2017 Release Date, Cast: What We Know So Far About Second Remake

Sony's Spider-Man 2017 reboot is coming to theaters on July 28, 2017. With the release date confirmed, other details have begun emerging over the past weeks including who will play main protagonist Peter Parker.

For this article, we will flesh out everything that has been revealed so far.

Marvel and Sony are Collaborating This Time

This time around, Sony has decided to work with Marvel in the 2017 reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.  Disney will also have a hand in the production, as the company currently owns Marvel. The 2017 version is in fact a reboot of the previous remake starring actor Andrew Garfield. In total, there are three separate versions of Sony's Spider-Man films.

Though Marvel gave birth to Spiderman, Sony bought the rights to the iconic hero for $7 million in 1999. The Japanese media giant has not relinquished that position, even though Marvel tried to buy back the rights.

New Peter Parker Confirmed

In July, actor Tom Holland was confirmed to be playing geeky Peter Parker whose alter-ego is Spider-Man.  Holland is better known for his live stage performances in New York City's Broadway scene.

Curiously, the 19-year-old is expected to be making his first appearance as Spider-Man in the upcoming film Captain America: Civil War, which debuts on May 6, 2016. This marks the first, and hopefully not last, film crossover of Spider-Man and the Captain.

Unlike the previous two Spider-Man film series, the 2017 reboot will not feature an origins tale. This information was confirmed by the film's writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein via a Grantland podcast.

"I think that everybody feels like you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died, and we probably don't need to revisit that," Goldstein explained.

For now, plot details remain a mystery. However, Daley and Goldstein did reveal to ET that the premise involves Parker struggling to be a kid in high school.

Is Kraven the Main Villain?

According to Heroic Hollywood, Sony's VP of Creative Affairs Karen Moy recently purchased a copy of Kraven's Last Hunt comic. Based on this information, the publication claimed that Kraven may be under consideration for the main villain in the 2017 reboot.

Those familiar with the MCU will note that Kraven the Hunter is perhaps Peter Parker's most formidable foe. Besides having an obsession with killing the Spider-Man, Kraven is a master tracker who possesses the ability to kill using only his bare hands.

Naturally, this latest information is speculative at best.  Even so, more information may be revealed by either Sony or Marvel in the days ahead.
