As filming for Zoolander 2 ended recently, the movie is entering into postproduction. Naturally, it will take a bit of time before a new trailer is released. Happily, fans can take comfort in knowing that actors Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are respectively reprising their roles as Zoolander and Hansel.
Even though details are scarce, there are still tidbits of information floating around. We will be looking at these in the sections below. Zoolander 2, which is directed by Ben Stiller, is expected to hit theaters on February 12, 2016.
Premise Takes Places 15 Years Later
Fans will recall the happy ending in original 2001 film that saw the main protagonist retiring and opening "The Derek Zoolander School for Kids Who Can't Read Good (and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too)."
However, that was 15 years ago. In the 2016 sequel, Derek Zoolander no longer enjoys his celebrity status. He and rival-turned-friend Hansel are now regarded as has-beens. Adding to their troubles, a rival company tries to put them out of business. Other than that detail, nothing further is known about Zoolander and Hansel's story in the upcoming film.
Mugato Returns
At end of Zoolander, Mugatu was arrested for his role in the attempted assassination of the Malaysian prime minister. It is safe to assume that he spends a longtime in prison. However, it is unclear how the character fits into the plot of Zoolander 2.
Comedian Will Ferrell, who plays Mugatu in the first and second Zoolander, was spotted in Rome during filming in May. Photos of the actor sporting Mugatu's signature blond hair were published on British Tabloid Daily Mail.
Cameo Appearances and New Cast
The first Zoolander was notable for casting celebrities to appear as themselves. This included Bill Zane, Fabio and Gary Shandling.
In Zoolander 2, Bill Zane will reprise his role as himself. The film also stars Justin Beiber, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Fred Armisen and Olivia Munn in cameo appearances. Actresses Penélope Cruz and Kristen Wiig will also be appearing in yet-to-be-named roles as well.
