Solid details for Game of Thrones Season 6 have yet to materialize, which is not unusual considering the amount of secrecy pending the not-yet-announced release date. For now, what GoT viewers have to rely on is a tidbit of information that was revealed in recent days. Be warned, there are spoilers from the fifth season ahead.
Jon Snow Gone for Good?
One question on many viewers' minds is the fate of Jon Snow, who was seemingly stabbed to death in the Season Five finale. Even U.S. President Barack Obama expressed concern over the character's apparent demise.
"Three weeks ago, I was the in the company of the President of the United States," GoT director David Nutter told EW at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday. "He turned to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and said, 'You didn't kill Jon Snow did you?' I said, 'Jon Snow is deader than dead.' I thought I was going to be sent to Guantanamo or something, but fortunately I'm here - but he's dead."
For the first time at Comic Con, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were not present. George R.R. Martin, the author whose books inspired the series, was also absent.
Still, participants were able to meet cast members including Natalie Dormer, Conleth Hill, Alfie Allen, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Hannah Murray, Sophie Turner, Carice van Houten and Maisie Williams.
Executive Producer Carolyn Strauss and Director David Nutter were also present.
Cast Absolutely Clueless on Show's Direction
Despite the presence of a star-studded panel at Comic Con, fans were left hopelessly in the dark regarding the direction of the popular HBO series. Apparently, the cast was in a similar situation.
One fan in particular questioned Natalie Dormer about the plotline for the Game of Thrones sixth season.
"To be perfectly honest, honey, a lot of us here at the table are in the same position as you guys and I don't have an effing clue what will happen," Dormer said, according to the Guardian.
Even though the majority of the show is faithful to its source material, showrunners have not followed every little detail exactly.
For instance, Lady Stark was resurrected in the book series as vengeful revenant 'Lady Stoneheart'. Eventually, Stoneheart sentences Brienne to hang. None of these events happen in the GoT TV series as Lady Stark was never reanimated.
In short, not even the original book series can confirm what will happen when Game of Thrones Season 6 begins sometime next year.
Possible Release Date
Based on previous release cycles, new seasons tend to debut in April. The sole exception is Season 3, which premiered on March 31, 2013.
Hence, it is possible for Season 6 to be air within a similar time frame. DenOfGeeks calculates that the new season will come on April 3, 2016. Naturally, this information is purely speculative. For now, fans will need to wait for more confirmation details from the Game of Thrones' showrunners.
