A confident Japan side will take on the U.S. Women's National Team in the finals of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup at 4.p.m. Sunday at the BC Place, Vancouver, British Columbia. While the U.S. Team is favored in winning the FIFA Championship, Japan is sure they will retain the title they stole from the U.S. in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup finals. Sunday's game is actually a rematch of the 2011 finals which the U.S. dominated early in the game, only to crumble to Japan from a penalty kick, reported Oregon Live.
The USA women's team defeated Germany, 2-0, in the semis to advance to the finals, while Japan earned the finals berth after beating England, 2-1, in the semifinal on an own goal by England's Laura Basset in extra time.
In 2011, the USA was also favored to win the World Cup but lost to Japan from a penalty in one of the biggest upsets in Women's football history. The USA Women's team could not hide their disappointment and were crying on the field at Commerzbank-Arena, in Frankfurt, Germany after they were crushed by the Japanese side, said Alwaba.
U.S. team striker and captain Abby Wambach described that 2-3 loss to the Japanese as a "major injury" to her soccer career. She told The Guardian at that time, "This is going to hurt me for long."
Japan is hoping to duplicate the records set by USA and Germany who both won the Women's World Cup twice. The Americans will try to redeem their 2011 loss from Japan. The USA Women's National Team last won the FIFA World Cup in 1999 when they hosted the championship for the first time.
Meanwhile, Olivia, a gray parrot kept at the Nasu Animal Kingdom zoo in Tochigi Prefecture in Japan, has reportedly predicted that Japan will retain the championship and defeat the USA team on July 5, said Ballball.
Olivia is being credited for accurately predicting six victories for the Nadeshiko at the ongoing World Cup.
The parrot reportedly selected the Japanese flag over the U.S. flag on Friday on a tiny stage covered with artificial flag, indicating Olivia's forecast of a Japanese victory in Vancouver. The event was witnessed by several visitors of mostly Japanese who cheered and applauded as expected.
