An online petition calling for a constitutional amendment reaffirming the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman is rapidly gaining signatures, reflecting the nation's outrage over the Supreme Court decision regarding the issue.
According to its website, the petition was started three days ago--just after Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage a constitutional right in the United States.
"No longer may this liberty be denied," Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the decision. "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were."
The petition, which was created by lifesitenews.com, has garnered over 46,894 signatures as of Monday morning, nearly achieving half of its 100,000-signature goal.
"Not only does this decision go against the the will of the millions of Americans who voted to pass laws and amendments defending traditional marriage in dozens of states, it also flies in the face of the nature of marriage as accepted for millenia of human history, the clear will of God, and human nature itself. Equally importantly, it undermines the right of children to a mother and father, and effectively makes it open season on religious liberty in America," the page description reads.
It continues, "Marriage as the union of a man and a woman is the bedrock of any healthy society. To affirm and defend the true nature of marriage is not to be motivated by prejudice or hatred. It is simply to affirm that reality is what it is, and that it cannot be changed by judicial fiat."
It adds that while the decision will likely have "serious consequences worldwide," there is still a way for politicians to take action to protect marriage.
"For the sake of our nation, the world, and our children, Congress must pass a pro-marriage constitutional amendment," the description explains.
The petition, addressed to "All U.S. Congressmen and Senators," goes on to express a belief that "marriage can only be defined as the union of one man and one woman, and that this definition of marriage is the only definition that protects the rights of children, promotes the welfare of society, and corresponds with the will of God, human nature, and the truth about marriage itself."
It encourages those opposed to the SCOTUS decision to sign their name below the final paragraph, which reads, "As such, I demand that you immediately respond to this egregious overreach of judicial power by passing a constitutional amendment reaffirming the true definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman."
