Motorola's Moto X series is receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, while a similar update is already available with the Moto E (2nd Gen). Naturally, users with locked devices will need to wait for expected rollout from their respective carriers. Meanwhile, the Moto G (2013) and Moto G (2014) have yet to receive Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop Launch Schedule
Monday morning, Motorola's David Shuster announced that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Moto X Pure Edition (2nd Gen) will be delayed. The reason given was due to a bug discovered during an earlier soak test. Shuster also confirmed, via an earlier Google+ posting, that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update is now available on Moto X 1st gen devices, .
"I am pleased to announce that we have started full deployment of the 5.1 Android Lollipop upgrade for Moto X (1st Gen) for US Retail, Brazil Retail and Rogers in Canada," he wrote during the weekend.
It is unclear when major U.S. wireless service providers will start making the Android 5.1 Lollipop on Moto X (1st Gen) available to their customers. For now, users will need to wait patiently from their respective carriers.
Moto E Series Android 5.1 Lollipop Rollout Status
Earlier, Verizon rolled out the Android 5.1 Lollipop on the Moto E (2nd Gen).
As of now, there is no word concerning when the Moto E (1st Gen) will start receiving Android 5.1 Lollipop. Curiously, Motorola has release notes for that version of Android 5.1 Lollipop. According to the XDA developers forum, Motorola is conducting soak tests for Android 5.1 Lollipop on Moto E (1st Gen).
Moto G 1st Gen, Moto G 2nd Gen
Motorola has not confirmed whether the Moto G 1st Gen and Moto G 2nd Gen is receiving Android 5.1 Lollipop. Currently, both versions of the Moto G are on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
According to GeekSnack, it is highly unlikely that either one of those devices will receive the future Android updates. These developments may prove to be a disappointment. The Moto G series has been a hit with budget-minded consumers seeking higher performance, but at a much lower price.
Earlier, Motorola released the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Moto G 1st Gen and Moto G 2nd Gen in India. It is not clear whether Motorola will update the Moto G series in other countries. Consumers should note that Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is the latest iteration of Android Lollipop. This is not to be confused with the earlier Android 5.1 Lollipop firmware.
