Supergirl is a television adaptation of a popular DC Universe superhero that is coming to CBS in the Fall. Unfortunately, a leak of the Supergirl pilot has started to appear online, which leads people to wonder whether or not the leak was done on purpose before the Supergirl Release Date to increase the buzz.
According to Deadline Hollywood, a high-quality copy of the pilot (1080p HD) for Supergirl leaked to private sites thanks to a German site known as Excipio, dedicated to piracy. Considering that the pilot was not supposed to hit CBS until November, this is quite a feat of piracy. It is worse than the case of the first four episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones Season 5 were ripped from a pre-release press screener.
There is speculation that the leak might be part of a marketing campaign in order to gauge how DC's newest superhero effort will take. Apparently, this is not the first time this has happened to a DC hero who is about to get a show as The Flash also leaked last year. The Flash has had an immense year and a season finale that really took its audience by storm, but the leak was also well-accepted by fans that watched it.
Yet no show's pilot has ever been released this far in advance. Considering that the Supergirl trailer has been getting a lot of negative feedback due to comparisons with a fake Black Widow movie trailer from Saturday Night Live, it is possible that the leak is to determine whether or not fans will like the episode, and then praise it online. That way, when episode 2 of Supergirl finally airs, there will be people who will be anticipating it, according to Variety.
From what is shown from the trailer, it is very clear that Supergirl's uncertainty, even doubting her ability to fly, might come off as "chick flick" or "rom com" material, but it is very exciting to see her rescue a plane on her own. After that is the typical superhero clichés of making a costume and pretty much declaring a never-ending battle for truth and justice. It appears that Supergirl intends to work for some government agency who is trying to stop aliens from invading, so it looks like there is kind of an X-Files conspiracy theory thrown into the mix.
Considering that Supergirl is a DC comics character, and that DC already has some hit shows based on their intellectual properties like Arrow and The Flash, one can't help but wonder if Supergirl will find her way to work into this television universe. Even though CBS has ordered a full season, Screen Rant reports that there isn't a current plan about mixing the Girl of Steel just yet.
Supergirl certainly has no shortage of star power that is both old and new. Kara/Supergirl is played by Melissa Benoist, whose previous work included Glee. James Olsen is played by Mehcad Brooks, who has been on both True Blood and Desperate Housewives. Then Calista Flockhart, formerly of Ally McBeal, will play Kara's boss Cat Grant, a well-established character from the Superman comics. Also on hand are some Superman alumni like Dean Cain, the Lois and Clark Superman as Fred Danvers, and Helen Slater, the Supergirl from the 1984 movie, as Sylvia Danvers. The Danvers are the adopted parents of Supergirl in the comics.
Assuming that you have not seen it already, Supergirl will premiere sometime in November 2015 on CBS, and it will be on Mondays at 8 PM.
