"I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life" -Abraham Lincoln
Mother's Day arrives on Sunday, May 10 this year, and is a special day when we honor those who have either carried us into the world or have played a significant role in our lives.
For those who have been raised by a God-fearing mother or mother figure, Mother's Day is particularly important because it honors the woman who, through continual sacrifice and love, gave her children a glimpse of God's incredible love for them.
The Bible includes many passages that encourage and honor mothers. One example is found in Proverbs 1:8-9: "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck."
As Mother's day approaches and we consider what we have to be thankful for in our uniquely beautiful matriarchs, coming up with special gift ideas for each one can be challenging. Thus, we've collected a variety of personal and memorable gifts to honor and bless the special mother--or mothers--in your life.
1. For the sentimental lady: A picture of your mother with her mother or children in a beautiful picture frame inscribed with her favorite Bible verse.
The picture should be one she hasn't seen in a long time - maybe her and her mother when she was a little girl, or perhaps her grandmother if they were particularly close. Place the photo in a beautiful, unique frame inscribed with a Bible verse letting your mother know how much you love her. You can find a variety of beautiful frames here.
2. For the humanitarian: pledge to sponsor a mother, family, or orphan in her name.
Each year, a number of Christian nonprofits encourage people to honor a special mom or mother figure in their lives by making a difference in the life of a poverty-strickn mother or family overseas. Some non-profits include Samaritan's Purse, World Vision, and Compassion International.
3. For the prayer warrior: a Dotmom empowerment conference and weekend getaway.
The conference, which is sponsored by Lifeway, is held September 25-16 in Nashville, TN. Early bird tickets are $69, and the event is to encourage and equip moms as they raise kids to know and love Christ. It's a time for all moms to come together that's spiritually refreshing, equipping, and fun. You can get tickets here.
4. For the foodie: Breakfast in bed and with a note explaining why you love her.
Breakfast in bed is guaranteed to make your mother feel loved. Make her favorite breakfast foods, and add a hand-picked flower in a tiny vase and a handmade card explaining why you love her to make it extra special.
5. For the jewelry lover: 'Angel' necklace inscribed with children's names
The jewelry loving mother will be touched by this unique necklace. The sculpted angel necklace from Kay Jewelers celebrates the unbreakable familial bond by engraving the names of up to five children in the angel's wings as well as their individual birthstones. You can order the necklace here.
6. For the beauty lover: Mother's Day lotion-soap gift set from Thistle Farms,Nashville, Tn.
Thistle Farms is a Christian organization that advocates for and rehabilitates women who have been the victim of domestic violence, addiction, and life on the streets. They make "handmade products, as good for the earth as they are for the body," and are just 22$. You can order a set here.
7. For the hardworking mother: give her the day off.
On Mother's Day, make sure your mother feels appreciated by recruiting all of your family members in doing tasks that the matriarch normally does, allowing her to sit back and relax.
8. For the music lover: buy tickets to see her favorite worship band
Whether it's Hillsong, Third Day or Tenth Avenue North, your music-loving-mother will appreciate a night of praising God through worship and song. You can find tickets to a variety of shows across the nation here.
Make sure you let the special lady in your life know how much you appreciate her by honoring her with a special gift this Mother's Day!
