There are many ways to propose to your girlfriend, but New Brunswick, Canada's Country 94.1 asked its listeners to give them a video of the very best marriage proposal for a chance to win $20,000. That's when Saint John's Ben Vienneau had the idea to stage a mock arrest of his girlfriend and propose to her while she's almost taken down to the station in a squad car. Sound like it wouldn't work? It did!
In the video, included below, Ben's girlfriend, Marcia Belyea, is driving her truck with Ben in the passenger's seat. Cameras set up from multiple angles in and outside of the truck capture the scene when Marcia gets pulled over by a Saint John police officer.
"10-29, if you're not sure what that is, that's a marriage proposal in progress," the officer jokes at the beginning of the video before he pulls Marcia over. The officer is apparently a friend of Ben's, and his cover is almost blown when Marcia thinks she recognizes him.
What's funny about the "arrest" is that Marcia actually doesn't have the current registration or insurance for the truck, which makes everything much more believable for her. When the officer informs Marcia that she also has about $2,000 worth of unpaid fines, he places her in the back of his squad car where, sadly, she begins to cry.
But Marcia is quickly surprised when the officer tells her of a "highly unorthodox" way in which she can avoid the fine and jail time.
"Ben and I have come to an agreement where we've agreed to waive the fine, and let you go, if you take his hand in marriage," the officer says.
Marcia's tears of sadness quickly turn to tears of joy as Ben gets down on one knee and makes the official proposal to her while she's still in the police car. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you," he said.
And she said yes! Accompanied by a round of applause from the other officers at the scene, Marcia gets out of the car and hugs Ben. "Can I see the ring? Just for evidence," another officer jokes.
And the best news is that Ben and Marcia won the radio contest, allowing them to have the $20,000 dream wedding they've always wanted at St. Andrew's by the Sea in New Brusnwick.
Other proposals in the contest included one on a zipline, one during a duck hunting trip, and one done during a mock documentary about a church sermon.
The YouTube video of the arresting proposal has so far enjoyed almost 500,000 views and Ben and Marcia are still happily married. Congrats to them both!
