There's no doubt that the Elder Scrolls series is one of the largest and most popular in video game history, so it only makes sense that many fans are anticipating news of the yet-unannounced Elder Scrolls 6 title on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But how close are we to getting a new Elder Scrolls game, and is it top priority for Bethesda?
If we're going by timelines, many Bethesda customers would seem to be pulling for a Fallout 4 release before another Elder Scrolls game, but the developer is certainly big enough to do both.
In fact, a recent rumor seems to indicate that the sixth Elder Scrolls game would release in June of this year, right after its announcement at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles from June 16th to the 18th. Bethesda has already confirmed a specialized press event during the conference, which is not something that the company normally does. But it's not likely that the game would release right after being announced, so while an announcement for Elder Scrolls 6 is extremely likely at E3 2015, a release of the game isn't. The hype train needs to build up steam!
Many expected Fallout 4 to be announced at the Game Developer's Conference earlier this month, but there was nothing. Does this mean the Maryland-based developer is shooting instead for another Elder Scrolls release to take advantage of the wild popularity that was enjoyed by Elder Scrolls: Skyrim?
The question at this point isn't if a sixth Elder scrolls will happen but when and where will it take place? Will it follow the world of Morrowind, or keep going with Skyrim?
Looking at each game's storyline, the destruction of towers is certainly a theme -- both indirectly and indirectly. Six of the eight great towers have already fallen, with the two remaining being Green-Sap and the Adamantine Tower. Green-Sap would make the most sense to be next in line, according to lore, so that would mean we could see Elder Scrolls 6 taking place in the Wood-Elf haven of Valenwood.
Aside from the Wood Elves, Valenwood is heavily populated by the ape-like Imga. That would certainly be an interesting focus for the new game, as well.
The Summerset Isles are also a good possibility, especially since we've seen that area highlighted in the MMO Elder Scrolls Online. But that might also mean that the Summerset Isles have scratched off the list, so to speak, and Bethesda would be looking at a new zone to highlight.
The world of Tamriel really has three major territories that have yet to be explored in its own title: Elsewyr, Black Marsh, and Valenwood. It's a safe bet that we'll eventually see a game for each of these, but Valenwood is most likely next.
So now we wait until Bethesda's big press conference in mid-June to see if rumors and predictions are true, and start preparing for the next big Elder Scrolls game that should be coming out in 2015 or 2016.
