Legendary rocker Bono closely escaped tragedy by the grace of God on Thursday after a mid-air accident caused the door of his aircraft to tear completely away.
CNN reports that the U2 musician was making a two-hour trip from Dublin to Berlin on board a Learjet 60 D-CGEO with four friends heading to the Bambi International Music awards when the incident took place.
Bono's U2 bandmates were not in the plane, as the singer had left early to attend a diplomatic event with Gerd Mueller, the German minister of economic cooperation and development
"He was extremely lucky, the plane could have gone down" a source is quoted in the Irish Daily Mail as saying.
"About an hour into the journey they heard a big thud coming from the rear of the plane. When they landed they were horrified to learn that the compartment at the rear of the plane had completely detached.
"The entire door along with Bono and his companions' luggage had fallen out mid-air. They don't know if the door and the contents landed over water or land but they were extremely lucky. They were at an altitude where anything could have happened and they are all feeling very lucky to be alive."
Although Bono has not yet made a comment on the incident, he seemed quite unfazed, meeting with Walter Lindner, Germany's special representative on Ebola, just a short time later.
But one thing is certain: because of his strong Christian faith, he is likely crediting the grace of God--something he strongly believes in--instead of luck, for saving his life.
"...I love the idea of the Sacrificial Lamb," he stated in 2010.
"I love the idea that God says: Look, you cretins, there are certain results to the way we are, to selfishness, and there's a mortality as part of your very sinful nature, and, let's face it, you're not living a very good life, are you? There are consequences to actions. The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death. That's the point. It should keep us humbled. It's not our own good works that get us through the gates of heaven."
