Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 is coming to ABC Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9/8c. Also, the Agent Carter spinoff will debut during the show's mid-season break in the winter.
ABC unveiled the S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 teaser, providing clues on what to expect in future episodes.
"This is a make or break moment," Agent Phil Coulson says ominously. "The enemy has the advantage, but we need to fight on for those we've lost. So, their sacrifices they made were not made in vain."
In the previous season, S.H.I.E.L.D. is nearly destroyed in an assault by HYDRA. These events happen to tie in with the plot from the Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Now Fights From the Shadows
The already covert S.H.I.E.L.D. spy agency has gone more secretive with the Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) as the new director.
"We'll disappear...become like ghosts," Coulson tells his team. "That's how we have to live now...in the shadows...to protect the innocent...to save lives...even when they don't know it."
After events in the first season, S.H.I.E.L.D. is deemed a terrorist organization by the nations of the world. Former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) goes into hiding, after he is presumed dead. Before doing so, he hands leadership over to Coulson.
With Fury gone, Coulson has to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. with limited resources. In the process, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency faces hostility of the world's governments as well as the emerging HYDRA threat.
Skye Gets a Makeover
One scene from the teaser briefly shows Skye (Chloe Bennett) rappelling from the ceiling, while decked out in ninja-black attire. Her demeanor is cool and professional.
The character has indeed come a long way from her beginnings as an adventure-seeking, smart-mouthed hacker. Under the supervision of Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Skye gradually realizes her potential as a field operative.
By Season 2, it seems that the young recruit has finally become a full-fledged agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is comes as no surprise, considering that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s manpower was nearly gutted in the previous HYDRA attack.
Meanwhile, Skye has become aware of her mysterious past. She is apparently the first living being designated a 0-8-4, which is the S.H.I.E.L.D. term for objects of unknown origins. In other words, she might be an alien.
Agent Ward is Locked-Up
Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) is perhaps one of the more controversial characters on the show. The teaser shows the character dress in prison garb and locked in a maximum security prison, presumably under S.H.I.E.L.D. management.
Ward starts off as trusted member of Agent Coulson's task force. Highly-competent and brave, Grant often puts the welfare of the team above his own. In previous episodes, he saves the lives of team members including Simmons and Skye. The veteran agent also starts to form an unlikely brotherhood bond with the geeky Fitz.
However, it turns out he is working for HYDRA as an undercover operative. In fact, Wards' actions were part of his deception. He reveals his true colors, when he murders Agent Victoria Hand in the seventeenth episode. Grant also dumps Fitz and Simmons into the ocean, nearly drowning them. Due to oxygen deprivation, Fitz goes into a coma.
Though he survives the S.H.I.E.L.D. counterattack led by Agent Coulson, Ward is captured and detained. Still, Grant is more than likely to be having an important role in the next season. At this time, ABC has yet to reveal details.
