The Chiefs are working on figuring out the way that they will debut in Week 1 on September 7 at home against the Tennessee Titans.

The team defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 41-39 and has three more preseason games to go before when every play begins to count.

In the game against Bengals, rookie running back De'Anthony Thomas put down an 80-yard punt return touchdown. Since Thomas and the defense were responsible for 27 of 41 points, quarterback Alex Smith admitted that their offense needs to get significantly better.

"You look at two third-and-shorts that we didn't convert, one on the run play and the last on the pass play - miscommunication there with the receivers," he said, according to KCChiefs.com. "You just can't have it."

Smith will most likely play for the entire first half, where he will play against two of NFL's top defensive players - defensive lineman Greg Hardy and linebacker Luke Kuechly.

Panthers' Hardy has 81 tackles and 26 sacks in the last two regular seasons combined. Meanwhile, Kuechly, 23, was named last year the youngest AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in history. The two year rookie has a total of 199 tackles and six interceptions, according KCChiefs.com.

If Alex Smith and the starters can attempt high number of passes against the formidable defense by Panthers, the Chiefs are off to a good start.

A maturing Cam Newton sets the offense during last Sunday’s 10-9 win over the 49ers, which really put the Panthers in the NFL’s consciousness.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton missed the Preseason game 1 as he has had a surgery in March to tighten the ligaments in his ankle.

Coach Ron Rivera said that Newton would play the first quarter of Sunday night's nationally-televised game against the Chiefs.

Newton said his ankle is still than 100 percent, but wouldn't put an exactly percentage on it after Thursday's practice, according to Charlotte Observer. He said he will continue with the rehab plan instead of taking any risks that would jeopardize his return in the regular season.

"Each day it's been getting better and better for me. At this point we don't want to have any mishaps in the treatment process," Newton said. "I'm doing as much as I can, or as much as (Vermillion) is allowing me to do with my ankle, so I can be 100 percent when the time is needed."
