In the new trailer for Assassin's Creed: Unity, Ubisoft has announced that the game is coming to stores on Oct. 28 of this year. As of the now, the latest installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise is available for pre-order on Ubisoft's official page.
Tying in with recent developments, Ubiblog has recently released a video interview with Alex Mancio, the creative director of Assassin's Creed: Unity. The interview had taken place at E3 2014, but was released on YouTube on July 31.
In the process, there were many spoilers revealed. Here are three reasons why fans should be excited before the release date.
Unity is the First Assassin's Creed Game on the PS4 and Xbox One
During the interview, Alex emphasized that Assassin's Creed: Unity will take full advantage of next-gen hardware such in the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. By doing so, the game will feature a vibrant cityscape not unlike the environment in the first Assassins' Creed game.
"Unity is the first next-generation iteration of the franchise," Alex stated. "And, so we wanted to make sure to go back to our core values, and that is all about a large urban center."
The Ubisoft developer added that Paris was selected because of its historical diversity and aesthetic quality.
"It [Paris] is arguably the most beautiful city in the world, and it's rich in history," he explained.
Tie-in with the French Revolution
The Assassin's Creed franchise chronicles the long-running Assassins-Templar war throughout the millennia. Each installment takes players to a different part of history, incorporating actual historical events and personas. Still, there is a catch.
In the main storyline, the Templars have taken over the world and have written the history that we are most familiar with. Only the Assassins know the truth because they are able to see into the past using the Animus machine.
Hence, Ubisoft takes great historical liberties with the plot, since the narrative is told through the eyes of the Assassins. For the latest installment in the series, the setting has moved to the French Revolution.
"It was very short time frame. It happened 1789-1794. It started pretty peacefully, but it then degenerated into what is known later as the Reign of Terror, where...thousands of people were beheaded using the guillotine," Alex Mancio said.
Players take on the role of Arno, a member of the French-chapter of the Assassins during the revolution. Along the way, the character encounters many real-life historical figures from French history.
"Marquis de Sade has a role in our game. We have obviously the King [Louis the XVI], Marie Antoinette his wife. We have Napoleon. We have Josephine [de Beauharnais]. Our game is literally littered with historical characters, and historical events," Mancio emphasized.
Main Missions and Side-Quests
As with previous franchise-titles, Assassin's Creed: Unity will feature numerous side-quests along with the main missions in an open-world environment much like what is found in Grand Theft Auto V and Watch Dogs.
The Brotherhood Missions drive the campaign storyline, as players embark on missions for the assassins. In these quests, the game will feature events that tie the players in some way to the French Revolution.
Players can choose to take a break from the campaign by taking up side-quests that will reveal more information behind historical characters and events. These were features that were featured in pretty much every title of the Assassin's Creed franchise.
