The Detroit Tigers have acquired David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team trade with the Seattle Mariners, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports who first broke the story.
Austin Jackson is going to the Mariners and both Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin are going to the Rays, according to various sources.
Price was one of the most coveted pick-ups in this years group of players available for trade, and Detroit is looking to add to their rotation to make a push through the summer and into the postseason.
Price is currently dominating from the mound, after a mediocre first two months of the season. He has recorded 12 consecutive quality starts to raise his record from 4-4 to 11-8 and he has lowered his ERA to 3.11. Currently he leads the Major League with 189 strikeouts over 170.2 innings pitched. He has gone the distance in two games this year, and the 6'6' lefty still appears to have many years remaining in his arm.
The trade gives Detroit a rotation of Price, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello, as they look to compete with the Kansas City Royals in the American League East, and they look to match the Oakland Athletics who just picked up John Lester in trade with the Boston Red Sox.
The Tampa Bay Rays had been on an upswing lately, and many people were wondering if the 2010 Cy Young award winner would still be available, but apparently the Rays are looking to rebuild for the future.
The Rays are currently 53-55, trailing the Orioles, Blue Jays, and Yankees in the American League East.
The World Champion Boston Red Sox are now in the cellar in the AL East, and have started off loading players in a rebuild of their own.
